Our Mission & Vision

Mission

Our mission is to:

Make public transit and other equitable, efficient transportation choices more competitive through policy reform and marketplace improvements.

Our business is policy reform and marketplace improvements. Our end goal is to make efficient and equitable choices more competitive. By “efficient,” we mean convenient, and resource-conserving (i.e. sustainable use of human and natural resources). By “equitable” we mean addressing the mobility and access needs of everyone fairly. By “making more competitive,” we mean increasing demand and improving the quality and quantity of the choices.

Vision

We take a holistic approach to transportation, understanding that transportation is a means towards ends. Transportation is a lever for many types of positive change. Odyssey’s directors, staff, and supporters advance our mission for many different reasons: social equity, air quality, public safety, livable communities, mobility and access, and economic vitality. Our approach considers all ends in an attempt to identify the best solutions. Our vision for Odyssey is to:

Be a leading force uniting Californians in support of transportation that improves people’s everyday lives and the communities in which they live.

By improving people’s everyday lives, we mean less time in traffic, more economic opportunity, and convenient, safe, affordable options for traveling where we want to go. By improving communities, we mean cities, towns and regions with economic vitality, clean air, balanced ecosystems, safe streets, social equity, and an engaged citizenry.

Specifically, Odyssey will know it has achieved its vision when:

  • Diverse transportation options, including light rail, commuter trains, paratransit, buses, safe bicycle lanes, pedestrian-friendly streets and roads, carpools, vanpools, car-sharing and more are easily accessible and used by a large segment of the population on a regular basis.
  • With minimal reliance on driving alone, you can leave your front door and available options can get you anywhere you want to go efficiently.
  • Transit becomes California’s second car—so efficient and convenient that it rivals the convenience and speed of driving alone.
  • Everyone has information about all the transportation options in California at their fingertips, enabling fully informed choices about how to travel anywhere in the state.
  • All transportation options seamlessly feed one another, and you travel a multimodal system without hassle.
  • People enjoy traveling in California, and frustrating gridlock commutes on the freeways are replaced with comfortable, safe trips to and from the workplace.
