THE CHALLENGE

Contribute to an open Self-Sovereign Identity ecosystem, consisting of a transparent trust framework and associated common infrastructure, empowering people and organizations to drive societal change. Enable all other Odyssey tracks to benefit from and contribute to this Self-Sovereign Identity ecosystem.

CONTEXT

If it was just down to technology, a successful cross-border Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) would already exist; a truly digital native identity, common, widely adopted and backed by government, industry and society.

In reality, SSI transcends technology, and implementation will require new tech, laws and regulations, as well as new ways of collaboration (eco-system), policy-making and governance.

To serve the future social and economical needs of humanity, the principles of this Self-Sovereign Identity ecosystem must be rooted in 21st-century dynamics.

Though previously impossible, this Odyssey Hackathon track strives to explore the full complexity of an SSI system in an operational setting. Through collaboration with other tracks and key-stakeholders, we aim to make viable the main elements of an SSI environment.

A Self-Sovereign Identity aims to facilitate transactions, while allowing full control by the end user whose identifying attributes are being shared. People and companies must be able to share and revoke use of personal data by one or all reliant parties.

BOUNTIES

The SSI-track has four different bounties. Teams can pursue all bounties or choose to focus on one, two or three. All bounties require a  multidisciplinary approach in order to create a solution that combines components of technology, business process, legal aspects and human aspects (usability). The cash rewards of this track will be split between these 4 bounties. Due to the nature of these bounties, they may also be shared with teams from other tracks.

Bounty 1 – The Adoption Driver

Ensuring the best adoption of an SSI-implementation for the end users of other Odyssey challenges. These can be one of our suggestions or a challenge not listed here:

Collaborate with the teams, the challenge leads and the challenge stakeholders of other challenges to demonstrate the feasibility of SSI-adoption in real-life settings and follow-up pilots from these challenges.

Bounty 2 – The Multidisciplinary Process

How will we enable the process for SSI on non-technical aspects? This includes

  • Build the policy construct – how might we enable SSI-policy within the context of international and local policies? How might we overcome the legal barriers to make an SSI framework a reality?
  • Build the human construct – how might we create a culture of trust and user friendly SSI as a desirable and realistic alternative societal concept?
  • Build the governance construct – how might we design the entity that will successfully govern SSI  without becoming a new central power?

Bounty 3 – Interoperability Development

There will not be a single technical solution for all identity needs. Therefore we have a bounty that will be awarded to the team demonstrating interoperability between different building blocks of the SSI Sandbox or connecting multiple challenges in a technology agnostic way.

Bounty 4 – The Open Call

Surprise us! Come up with a genuine new idea! New proposition, way of working or technical solution? Or combine all of the above bounties into one proposition or solution that works better than the ones that already exist!

For inspiration we suggest looking at the Nature 2.0, Opening Up Real Estate and Sovereign Nature challenges, can you come up with the SSI variant of thinking outside the box?

As with the other bounties, connecting to other tracks/teams is still very strongly encouraged.

IMPACT

A Self- Sovereign Identity can unlock the full potential of the digital global economy. The identity of people, organizations and things is relevant to any transaction, while protecting Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is of increasing importance.

SSI enables the necessary exchange of verified data before committing to (proposed) transactions, which for high-value/high-risk transactions includes the identity.

A WINNING TEAM WILL...

Demonstrate its solutions fit and make sense in the bigger picture.
Go after one or more of the presented bounties.
Work with teams from other hackathon tracks.
Collaborate on delivering an SSI ecosystem and framework to prove identity (of people, organizations and things) for other tracks to use.
Ensure interoperability.
Ensure their technology is agnostic, open-source and scalable.

Key element
Interoperability, user-centric, privacy-enhancing.

WHAT HAPPENS
WITH THE WINNER

Following testing at the Digicampus’ excellent SSI Sandbox facilities, the goal is to create pilots for great solutions. 50% co-financing is available under certain conditions.
The entire track and the best solution(s) will influence the Dutch government’s next steps in investing in SSI.

TEAM QUALITIES

We especially welcome multi-disciplinary teams consisting of members from multiple organizations or companies. Surprise us in both team composition and going beyond existing solutions.
We expect teams to not only focus on the tech angle but also exploring new social, inclusive, legal, governance, and policy solutions.

REQUIREMENTS

PP

All stakeholders (government, banks, companies, natural persons) privacy and legal roles must be taken into account.

PP

The identity solution should have a logical relation with AssetID.
(i.e. every person has an identity and PII and owns assets that are registered with an AssetID).

PP

The Identity Solution should adhere to existing standards, like W3C and GDPR, and has to be interoperable with other identity solutions. It has to empower the users!
All stakeholders in the ecosystem need to be able to work with this solution. Therefore, the solution needs to be open source. The open-source license used (Apache 2, GPL 3 or other) must make sense for the goals and ambitions of all stakeholders.

PP

The identity solution should have a logical connection to one or more solutions in other challenges of the Odyssey Hackathon.
