THE CHALLENGE

Build an application using www.D3A.io to simulate the bottom-up energy market of the future. Enable consumers to become active market prosumers, and find the new technical, regulatory and business roles of energy companies, DSOs, TSOs and regulators.

Check out the special deck for this track including the potential contract to win.

CONTEXT

The energy market is transforming at an ever-increasing speed. It is decentralizing because the market is at the parity point, where generation behind the consumer’s meter is competitive to the legacy system.

The current energy grid was not designed for the energy going two ways. It’is monopolistic, top-down and the final consumers are not considered as active market players.

Regulators are drafting new opportunities that will enable prosumers to actively participate in the market. This transformation creates very large technical, regulatory and business challenges for all stakeholders in the market: energy companies, DSOs, TSOs, final consumers and regulators.

In this track, all stakeholders come to the table to experiment and immediately validate new ideas and solutions.

BOUNTIES

The Energy Singularity track has two bounties, for teams to choose one or two. The cash rewards of this track will be split between these 2 bounties.

DSOs and utilities want to establish and participate in local, decentralized energy communities (markets): source flexibilities, ancillary services, congestion and granular grid accounting. On the market maker side, connecting the wholesale markets to a market with much smaller products and creating liquidity is the goal.

Bounty 2

On the consumer side, we see a plethora of new degrees of freedom and interaction for the final consumer/prosumer, because energy is the underlying essence that connects all businesses in society, but which has not yet been harnessed like a social network.

CHALLENGE AFFILIATES

IMPACT

Future energy markets are driven bottom-up, with advantages such as security, economics and scalability over top-down markets. Selling your energy to your neighbor means less loss of energy and costs due to transportation: selling to your neighbor = more revenue for your energy. For the consumer there is a plethora of new degrees of freedom and interaction like this one, as energy is one of the underlying essences that connects all businesses within society.

A WINNING TEAM WILL...

Bounty 1 – Energy Communities
Design the best trading algorythims
Develop an optimal data sharing solution
Enhance the D3A model (or break it:)

Bounty 2 – Consumer interaction
Invent a new form of interaction around energy trading
Reinvent how end consumers think about electricity to make it a new form of communication
