Odyssey Horizon

Odyssey Horizon is our online incubator for multi-stakeholder collaboration that connects governmental, corporate, scientific, and nonprofit partners and their key stakeholders, with anyone that can contribute to building open source solutions for their complex 21st-century challenges.

We enable our partners to:

  • turn their biggest challenges into a new clear pathway forward
  • mobilize internal and external stakeholders to work with the best-selected teams and experts from all over the world to build;
    • prototypes of new solutions, business opportunities
    • partnerships with motivated stakeholders
    • concrete multi-stakeholder projects
  • leverage the network effect of the inclusive global Odyssey ecosystem, where anyone from 8 to 88 years old that is intrinsically motivated to solve complex challenges through collaboration, is enabled to contribute.


Odyssey Horizon is a three phase journey from problem identification to building solutions and igniting pilots.

  • Preparation: problem identification, challenge definition, mobilizing stakeholders, recruiting and selecting the most suited teams, in-depth dive into the challenge.
  • Hackathon: solutions to complex challenges are co-created during 49 hours of online mass collaboration with stakeholders, teams and experts from all over the world.
  • Ignite: #winning solutions and teams are guided by Odyssey to kick-start a multi-stakeholder pilot with the challenge stakeholders.

Three physical editions of the Odyssey Hackathon took place in Groningen, The Netherlands. The fourth edition premiered in the Momentum online mass collaboration arena on November 13-15, 2020, with 105 teams in 21 challenges: https://youtu.be/mwpj70Gcatg.


Odyssey Horizon kicks off with a presentation of all 21 challenges at Odyssey Polaris, June 15, 2021. The next Odyssey Hackathon takes place in the Momentum online mass collaboration arena and is set for November 11-13, 2021.

Of the 5 teams participating in your challenge, you have chosen one (or two) who will ignite a multi-stakeholder pilot together with you and your stakeholders under the guidance of Odyssey. These are the teams that built the greatest prototype and could collaborate best with you and your stakeholders.

Scoping your Challenge with your stakeholders – 1 March-early June
Dedicated challenge scoping workshop with a Challenge Lead’s internal and external stakeholders to formulate the multi-stakeholder challenge.

Odyssey Polaris – TUE June 15
Launching the 2021 Odyssey Challenges. Enabling potential teams, experts and stakeholders to learn how they can contribute.
Team registration opens: early application = early curation = a spot in your favorite challenge.

Odyssey Connect – TUE Sep 7
In-depth presentations of all Odyssey Challenges by their challenge leads and crucial stakeholders. Opportunity for the teams to visit multiple presentations and ask questions before registering. 

Team application deadline – TUE Sep 14
3-6 persons per team.

Team selection announced – TUE Sep 21
The most suited teams per challenge are selected based on conversations with every team. Maximum of 5 teams per challenge.

Challenge Ecosystem Workshop 1 – Sep 28-30
Selected teams dive deeper into the core problems behind the challenge with their challenge lead and stakeholders. 

Challenge Ecosystem Workshop 2 – Oct 12-14
Teams present which part of the challenge they aim to focus on during Momentum, for challenge lead and stakeholder feedback + learn with which other teams to collaborate best. 

Getting Ready Event – TUE Nov 2
Training and preparing all Odyssey Momentum participants. 

Odyssey Hackathon – Nov 11-13
Hackathon from Thursday-Saturday, with results ceremonies per challenge on Sunday.

Ignite – Dec 1-14
Igniting the project proposal of the best team(s) per challenge towards a multi-stakeholder pilot.
